Embracing Your Inner Rebel: A Quest for Understanding

Ever felt like you’re just causing trouble when all you want is clarity? ADHD Entrepreneurs are often labelled as troublemakers or rebels, but let's disprove that BS. I'm reflecting on a conversation I had with Kathy Kolbe, creator of the Kolbe A™ Index and The Kolbe Creative Method - all about understanding ourselves better.

The Rebel Rousers
Kathy and I shared our experiences of being labelled as "rebel rousers." We weren't out to create disruption for the sake of it. We asked questions to understand and broaden our learning. This curiosity can be threatening to many, making us come across as challengers of authority. It's a similar experience for many ADHD Entrepreneurs—our need for understanding often leads to being labelled as rebels.
Seeking Knowledge, Not Trouble
Throughout my life, from school to my career, I have always asked "why". Why was a rule in place? Why was a process followed a certain way? The intention is always to understand, yet this was often misunderstood and threatened those in authority, making them defensive. This leads to labelling us as troublemakers. But here's the thing—our thirst for knowledge isn't about defiance. It’s about growth, improvement and efficiency – for us and others.
Standing Outside the Norm
As ADHD Entrepreneurs, we naturally stand outside the norm, outside the standard. We're part of a minority that seeks to carve out our own paths and always challenge the status quo. We ask questions not to be difficult, but to forge better pathways for success. And yes, this places us on the fringes. Yet these fringes are where our growth happens.
Solutions vs. Knowing the Answer
Kathy shared a profound insight: there's a difference between creating solutions and just knowing the answer. Memorizing facts won't solve complex problems. You need to understand the intricacies, the theory behind the practice, to come up with effective solutions. This understanding gives us the confidence to solve problems in innovative ways. We don’t just know the answers—we understand how to apply them. We learn to understand and not to know.
The Label Doesn't Define Us
Being called a rebel or troublemaker can feel isolating, but let's reframe that. Our relentless questions and drive for improvement may intimidate many, but it’s integral to OUR growth. We’re not just seeking to fit in. We’re creators, innovators, and life-long learners. The discomfort others feel is more about their insecurities than our actions.
Confidence in Understanding
Understanding builds confidence. When you know how things work, you can solve any problem thrown your way. That is why it’s vital to focus not only on learning the facts but also on grasping the underlying principles. This approach equips us to navigate complex challenges with ease.
Embrace Your Inner Rebel
To all my fellow ADHD Entrepreneurs: embrace your inner rebel. Use your curiosity and understanding as tools for growth. Being misunderstood is a small price to pay for the breakthroughs we achieve. Our community thrives on these very principles, and it’s what sets us apart from the rest. There are many of us out there, we simply need to find each other.
