An ADHD Perspective on Neuro Vision Therapy

Updated: Jun 28

Today, I want to dive deeper into a topic that has been a game-changer for my ADHD journey, neuro vision therapy. This might sound a bit strange, but it's more important than you might think.

Don’t feel like reading? Listen to the episode.

The Brain and Eye Connection

I had an eye-opening conversation with Dr. Stel Nikolakakis, an optometrist specializing in neuro vision therapy in Toronto, Canada. We got into the nitty-gritty of how the brain can be retrained with special prism lenses., specifically through neuro-vision therapy, to improve communication between your eyes and brain. Neuroplasticity.

I've spent years thinking my slow reading pace was due to dyslexia. However, Dr. Nikolalkakis’ insight led me to a revelation that my eyes and brain weren’t communicating properly. The solution? Prism glasses. BS you may say, well read on!

The Prism Glasses Revelation

These aren’t your regular glasses. Prism glasses work by reflecting light into your eyes more precisely, so your brain doesn't have to play catch-up with incoming information.

Almost immediately, I noticed substantial improvements—in reading speed and reading comprehension! For a fact-finder learner like me, this meant I could digest information quicker and, more importantly, retain it better. It was a game-changer for my entrepreneurial activities and future opportunities.

Improving Reading and Comprehension

Before this therapy, reading fast meant barely remembering anything. Post-prism glasses, I found myself processing information more efficiently. This has been huge!! As an ADHD Entrepreneur constantly consuming new information, being able to read and comprehend faster has enhanced my productivity.

Another massive benefit was feeling more grounded. Before, I always felt like my mind was somewhere in the stratosphere, thanks to ADHD. But with these glasses, it was like my brain discovered a new sense of stability. I could focus better – better focus my energy, and my emotional regulation improved—not entirely overcoming my ADHD, but certainly making it more manageable.

Peripheral Vision and Personal Space

One intriguing part of my conversation with Dr. Nikolakakis was about space management. My daughter, for instance, had struggled with her peripheral vision. These prism glasses have helped her—and me—better manage personal space. I used to feel uncomfortable if someone came too close, but now I can literally and figuratively see more clearly. My brain recognizes that I’m in a safer environment, allowing me to interact more freely with people around me.

Here's something that caught me off guard: improved hearing! During Covid, I realized how dependent I was on lip-reading. Masks made hearing people almost impossible for me. With the prism glasses, I found that I didn’t need to constantly swivel my head to hear the person speaking. This significantly improved auditory comprehension, made interactions smoother, and less strenuous. Less mentally fatiguing since my brain was working less to make all the garbled information fit together.

Emotional Regulation and ADHD Management

While the prism glasses have not “cured” my ADHD, they’ve certainly made it more manageable – I feel better about myself. I’ve experienced less overwhelm and better control over my ADHD symptoms. It’s part of a broader plan, but it’s a piece of the puzzle that makes a real difference.

It’s incredible how something as simple as wearing prism glasses can make such a profound impact. The brain’s ability to adapt—especially with the right tools—never ceases to amaze me. This has improved my day-to-day life and is helping my daughter feel more confident and connected to her surroundings.

Embrace Neuro-Vision Therapy

If you’re an ADHD Entrepreneur struggling with similar issues, I highly recommend looking into neuro vision therapy. The cost of the assessment is worth it, and the potential benefits are massive. It’s one more tool in our toolkit to navigate this unique journey we’re on.
